Hillsborough Superintendent MaryEllen Elia is continuing to work toward stationing armed security guard in Hillsborough public schools, to the tune of some controversy. Members of the Hillsborough County School Board are especially skeptical and asking some tough questions.
School board members are in the process of figuring out if the costs of the security guard would be better spent on preventative measures, like hiring additional guidance councilors and social workers.
Board Chairwoman April Griffin argues that hiring additional student support would help to lessen their workload (especially since the recession has tightened belts across the county), and make sure each councilor or social worker can devote more time to each student.
Where do you stand on the issue? On the one hand, armed security guards could help to monitor school safety and security. On the other hand, it put guns in schools, which could bring additional violence and psychological stress to students.
Curtis Protective Security Guards are now present in available in the Tampa Bay area. We’re not posted at public schools, but we do help to monitor and protect commercial facilities, retail buildings, and communities of all kind.
