A recent study conducted by a researcher at the University of North Carolina Charlotte looked at responses from more than 400 convicted robbers. This study gives security professionals as well as homeowners and business owners direct access into the minds of offenders and helps to understand their motivations and methods.

One of the major findings from the study was that burglars reported that when selecting a target, they take into account the proximity of other people, availability of escape routes, and signs of increased security, such as alarms, dogs, cameras, and other surveillance equipment. Half of the study participants reported that they typically burglarize homes, while an additional 31% focus on commercial buildings.

41% of those in the study reported that their intrusions were a unplanned, spur-of-the-moment activity. That means that security guards and other security measures on the property are even more important as they really do dissuade potential burglars and other criminals from choosing your home, property, or place of business to rob or vandalize.
