The recent shooting homicide of two people in Marylands is a tragic reminder that workplace violence is real. It seems more and more disgruntled and angry employees are seeking revenge against coworkers and employers, using deadly force at the workplace.

Employees using violence to settle the score from either real or perceived wrongs, is making headline news and social media just about every day!

Workplace violence is described by the United States Department of Labor as, “ any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. It can affect and involve employees, clients, customers and visitors. However it manifests itself, workplace violence is a major concern for employers and employees nationwide.
Who is at risk of workplace violence? Nearly 2 million American workers report having been victims of workplace violence each year. Unfortunately, many more cases go unreported.”

In two-thirds of homicides in the workplace, the victim and assailant have no known personal relationship. But it isn’t always about work.

According to CNN Money, “Then there are instances where a victim of domestic violence may be attacked by an abusive partner at work. What’s more, even when perpetrators of workplace violence are employees they may not take action because they’re unhappy on the job. Sometimes they commit workplace violence because of something else going on in their lives.”

What Can You Do?

Workplace violence has become a significant risk to corporations and businesses of all sizes.  Though nobody can predict where and when someone will stick with violence, you can protect yourself, employees, clients and guests.

Professionally trained security guards are a cost effective way to discourage and prevent workplace violence. Alert to suspicious activity and keeping employees safe. If someone is making threats or an employee is having a domestic problem, the security guard will not allow that person on the premises.
