The 2014 Healthcare Crime Survey by the International Healthcare Security and Safety Foundation conducted in 386 hospitals in the United States and Canada found that violent crime increased 16% between 2012 and 2013. Some of this increase can be attributed to a greater awareness of crimes and the willingness to report them. Occasionally crimes that occurred on hospital property but did not involve staff were not considered in their reporting or statistics. Even when crimes don’t directly affect staff they have an effect on the sense of well being and overall safety for the staff and patients.
