Photo by AmbroInternal theft; theft by employees increased 6.5% in 2013. This is a significant increase considering the rate of theft was high prior to the increase. 1.1 million people were arrested for shoplifting (theft) in 2013. There is no value in subtlety when it comes to crime prevention. Cameras should be obvious to anyone in the establishment. A good security system which includes camera, identifiable crime prevention officers and signage is reassuring to the good people who frequent your business while at the same time discouraging for people wanting to commit a crime. There is room for hidden cameras and stealthy officers but they should be used for specific problems or specific targets. In addition to your regular crime prevention tactics it is advisable to supplement your efforts with short term contract officers to confirm that your security program is being operated in the manner you have approved.
