The days of a security guard sitting at the entrance to a building or a warehouse is over as far as crime prevention. Security Officers must be proactive rather than reactive. Security providers must provide better value for the money being spent. The biggest loss now is not the theft of product the theft of ideas, computer data or the devaluation of a company due to poor health or climate practices. Companies must be able to make a surplus but they must also be able to protect their interests. Their interests continue to be hard assets such as building and chattels but increasingly they are the ideas that these companies are working on. Security Officers are the most obvious signs of Safety and Security but security providers need to provide greater depth to their services in order to remain relevant.  Their will always be a need for a person sitting at a gate but that is not where the greatest opportunities are. Those opportunities are found in vertical integration of services, competently delivered.
